We try our best to think of any and all questions you could be pondering before, during, or after booking your rental. We will always be updating the FAQs below. Feel free to catch us on any of the channels below if you have a question you don't see an answer to below.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOURS OF OPERATION?
Renter pick ups & drop offs are available Monday - Sunday from 7am-8pm (special exceptions on case by case basis.
Our office hours (for phone reservations and general inquiries) are Monday - Friday, 7am-8pm.
WHERE DO I PICK UP MY RENTAL?
We offer free delivery and pickups at most San Diego locations.
Please call us to discuss custom delivery/pick-up options.
WHAT IF I’M LATE FOR MY PICK UP OR DROP OFF?
All pickup & drop off times must be coordinated ahead of time. If you are running late to pick up or return your rental, please let us know as soon as possible. We understand things happen, so we will do our best to accommodate your request.
However, if you fail to inform us that you are running late for a pickup or drop off, we will assess a $25 late fee for every hour beyond your arranged pick up or drop off time.
DRIVING & INSURANCE
HOW MANY MILES ARE INCLUDED?
All rentals include 150 miles/day free. Excess mileage is charged at the following rates: $1.00/mile.
IS THERE A MINIMUM RENTAL PERIOD?
We require a minimum of (1) day fee for our rentals. If you want a half-day, you will still be charged for a 1-day rental.
WHAT IS THE MINIMUM AGE TO RENT?
Drivers must be over the age of 25. All drivers must have a valid driver's license and must pass a DMV verification before the trip begins.
HOW DOES THE INSURANCE WORK?
All vehicles are protected with a robust insurance policy for the entire duration of your trip. However, you must also provide us with a copy or photo of your personal insurance card.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET A FLAT TIRES OR HAVE MECHANICAL ISSUES?
We encourage all renters to utilize a professional Roadside Assistance program to assist with flat tires and other mechanical issues during your trip. You are welcome to add our Roadside Assistance package to your reservation any time before your trip begins. If you have your own Roadside Assistance program, you are responsible for confirming coverage during the rental period.
Please note that if you choose to perform tire or mechanical service yourself, The Wheelhouse Rentals is not liable for any damage caused to you or the vehicle.
RULES OF THE ROAD
WHERE CAN I DRIVE THE VEHICLE?
Driving on unpaved roads (excluding state- and county- maintained roads), dirt roads, restricted areas, and ‘off-road’ areas are not allowed. Taking any rental on non-maintained dirt roads, restricted areas, or off-road areas will violate the insurance and vehicle warranties. If you travel in a restricted area or get stuck, you are responsible for any expenses related to the damage (vehicle, tires, and windshield, etc,), as well as towing charges and any additional expenses related to getting the vehicle back on paved roads. We enforce a strict NO OFF-ROADING policy. This includes rock crawling, dune driving, and moderate to difficult 4x4 trails.
All vehicles must stay within the state of California.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE RETURNING MY RENTAL?
Your drop off time must be arranged in advance. Our operations depend on strict scheduling. Unless otherwise agreed upon, we expect you to return your rental at the time listed on your reservation. If you fail to inform us of a late return, we will assess a $25 late fee for every hour beyond your arranged drop-off time.
Please ensure the following requirements are met before returning your rental:
Full tank of gas (unless prepaid in advance)
Reasonably clean or “near clean” condition (no excessive mud, dirt, debris)*
Remove all personal items & trash
Report all damage to our team
*Do not drive through an automatic car wash.
A fee will be charged if your rental is returned without meeting the above conditions. Fees may vary depending on the amount of time/labor required to restore the vehicle back to our standards.
CAN I SMOKE IN THE VEHICLE?
Smoking is NOT allowed in any of our vehicles or tents. No exceptions!
A $1,000.00 fee will be charged if we find any evidence of smoking or vaping inside the vehicle.
Please keep all smoking (cigarettes, vaping, and other recreational substances) outdoors and within the restrictions of the law.
We enforce a strict NO SMOKING and VAPING policy.
ARE PETS ALLOWED?
We do not allow pets in any of our rentals to accommodate allergy-sensitive renters.
There is a $500.00 fumigation fee for rentals having any evidence of pets. This charge is at the sole discretion of The Wheelhouse Rentals. Our main concern is for the health of subsequent renters.
PAYMENT & CANCELLATIONS
HOW DO I RESERVE A VEHICLE WITH THE WHEELHOUSE RENTALS?
We accept reservations online, by email, or over the phone. We require a 25% deposit to secure your rental.

HOW DO I PAY FOR MY TRIP?
We accept all major debit and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express). No personal checks or cash accepted.
When using an international card, you may be charged an additional 3% transaction fee.
WHEN DO I PAY FOR MY TRIP?
In order to reserve your rental, we only require a 25% deposit. The remaining balance is due 4 days before your trip start date. Please note, the remaining balance will be automatically charged to the card on file. If you need to change your payment method or card, please inform us prior to the 4 day cut-off so we can update our records. The security deposit is due two (2) days before your trip start date and will be returned 7 days after your reservation ends, pending no issues. The same card will be used to charge the security deposit unless otherwise noted during the reservation process.
WHAT ABOUT THE SECURITY DEPOSIT?
We require a security deposit of $750 - $2,000 to cover any potential damage to the vehicle and/or equipment. The security deposit is due two (2) days before your trip start date and will be refunded upon safe return of the vehicle. Note, we may hold the security deposit for up to 7 days while we assess the vehicle condition.
Please note it may take 3-5 business days for the security deposit refund to be processed by your bank.

Full refund up to 5 days before pickup, then 75% refund for remaining days

CAN I RENT ADDITIONAL GEAR WITH MY RENTAL?
You can rent extras like beach chairs, coolers, boogie boards and more when you make your reservation!
